The Taste of Gin

Juniper — the prickly little plant responsible for gin’s distinctive flavour and aroma.

This original artwork is part of my Plants We’ve Turned to Booze series. Juniper gets a slight technical exemption: humans don't actually turn it into alcohol. We add it to alcohol and call the result gin.

Nerd notes

The blue-black juniper “berries” aren't berries at all. They're cones — their scales have become fleshy and fused together, disguising themselves rather convincingly as fruit.

Juniper is so fundamental to gin that it gave the drink its name. The English word gin developed from genever — related to the Dutch jenever and French genièvre, words derived from the name for juniper. So every time you order a gin, you're basically ordering a juniper.
