For centuries, elephant ivory was prized by artists and craftspeople for its smooth surface and ability to hold incredibly fine detail. Tusks became sculptures, portrait miniatures and intricately carved objects.

The Elephant in the Art Room is part of my Beautiful Things We’ve Killed for Art series, exploring the animals behind materials once valued by artists.

Nerd notes

Elephant ivory had a second life in the artist's palette. When offcuts of tusk were heated until they carbonised and then ground into powder, they produced a fine black pigment known as ivory black.

The name wasn't always a reliable ingredient list. Similar blacks were made from ordinary animal bones, and by the 19th century pigments could be sold as “ivory black” whether they contained ivory or not.
