Sable, Apparently
A Siberian weasel, whose tail hair has traditionally been used to make Kolinsky sable brushes — some of the most prized artists’ brushes in the world.
Sable, Apparently is part of my Beautiful Things We’ve Killed for Art series, exploring the animals behind traditional art materials. This one came from discovering that the name on one of the art world’s most prized brushes doesn’t quite tell you what animal it came from.
Nerd Notes
What makes the hair so prized is its peculiar combination of talents: it holds plenty of water and paint, springs back into shape and still comes to an exceptionally fine point.
In 1866, Queen Victoria commissioned Winsor & Newton to make her the finest watercolour brush possible in her favourite size, No. 7. The resulting Series 7 brush is still sold today.
