The dark juice from crushed Hibiscus rosa-sinensis was traditionally used to blacken and polish shoes in parts of Asia, which led it to sometimes be known by wonderfully practical names like shoeblack plant and shoe flower. In other words: it’s a tropical flower with a side hustle in footwear maintenance.
